“Elegant Colonial-style Hotel with a Beautiful Lemongrass Fragrance”
The location for Steung Siemreap is fantastic, right on the edge of Pub Street with all of its markets, restaurants and nightlife, but also near the river and a pagoda. I’ve stayed here twice and both times, the stay has been comfortable. The staff are friendly and very helpful. I asked them to help me organize events and transport. As you enter the foyer smells of lemongrass adding to the luxurious feel. A welcome drink and wet towel starts your stay while your room is prepared. Beautiful, wooden furniture, artwork, and décor set the scene. It is the little things like cloth napkins and paintings of Cambodian life that make this hotel special. The desk and study chair was a great place to sit and work despite some internet problems. There was even a special piece of furniture to lie your suitcase on. There are a lot of cupboards and a wardrobe but not many shelves inside them. The lighting system was good, and everything can be controlled from the bedside table. Unfortunately, there are a few problems. The first is the bathroom, despite the aforementioned elegance, you step into a bathtub to have a shower and use a plastic shower curtain. The bathtub makes getting into and out of the shower a little dangerous and I would not recommend this place to anyone who had impaired mobility or vision. Also, there are no shelves around the sink. All of your toiletries are confined to the limited space around the sink. By far the most serious issue for me was the internet connectivity. Frequently, my compute froze or times out while it was doing something online. Sometimes, it just did not work. Most of the time it was limited to two bars even in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep. This cost me a business meeting because I kept dropping out, so if you have to work online, this might not be the place to do it. The breakfast was predictable and uninspiring. I know that the general population have their favorites, but the buffet selection was exactly the same as the previous hotel we stayed at. A little variety or a signature dish goes a long way. The TV did not work. It turned on ok, but there was only a black screen with HTMI connection. There were no instructions on how to get the TV working either. There were no other channels or free-to-air TV. If I did not have an issue with the bathtub or the internet, I’d definitely go back. However, when I was travelling with my elderly mother last year, I deliberately avoided this hotel for that reason. Now that I know about the internet problems, I would not return until I was sure they were dealt with. Dropping out of that business meeting was embarrassing and I can’t afford for these sorts of easily avoidable problems to affect my work
