The biggest disappointment of our stay at Kayakapi Premium Caves wasn’t the rooms but the serious breach of trust with a tour we booked directly through the hotel. When a hotel presents itself as premium, guests naturally expect that the guides and businesses it recommends are chosen with care, integrity, and accountability. That expectation turned out to be a costly mistake. The tour took us to several places that, in hindsight, seemed like typical tourist traps rather than genuine cultural experiences. The most troubling was Göreme Onyx Jewellery, where we bought very expensive items presented as genuine zultanite, only to later question their authenticity. We didn’t stumble into these shops on our own; a guide from the hotel took us there. The hotel’s involvement implied endorsement, giving us a false sense of security we wouldn’t have had with an unknown vendor or unsolicited recommendation. I’m not saying the hotel knew about the questionable practices, but a hotel that profits from arranging excursions has a duty to ensure the quality of the experiences it recommends. Whether the hotel was aware or simply didn’t vet its partners, the outcome was the same: we trusted the hotel, and that trust was misplaced. The financial loss, while serious, isn’t even the most important issue.
