The history is fascinating, and everything and everyone was wonderful—no complaints at all.

The breakfast spread was full of local products, cheeses, charcuterie, and even vegan options. The room rate included access to the botanical garden with edelweiss, a sled track tour, and hiking trails starting from the hotel. The presence of cats was charming, and the café with its Art Nouveau décor and mountain view made for a lovely afternoon tea. Touring the hotel itself was amazing, with the library, period books, the doctor's office, the old telephone exchange, and vintage elevators. The view from the esplanade is one of the most beautiful mountain vistas I've ever seen! The only downside was that parking for the car was not included in the room price.

Tip: follow the road navigation. When you arrive, drive up the lift (50 m) and turn left immediately. There’s an electrical company there and that’s where you park. Then walk back down and check in. If you booked a room and a parking spot, you also register it at the ticket office downstairs.

The Schatzalp feels like a magical escape from the hustle, the need to function, constant availability, and the pressure to be perfect that the zeitgeist imposes. Instead, it offers calm, steadiness, rooms and social spaces without screens, displays, or background noise. The rooms are simple yet comfortable, lacking nothing. Thoughtful touches include bedside lamps with pull chains for on/off, a classic analog radio, loungers with blankets on the balcony, and an almost therapeutic lounge vibe described in the novel. The preserved Jugendstil dining hall is lovingly prepared. Long corridors with classic clocks still exude a sanatorium feel. The crunch of gravel while strolling in front of the main front and the meticulously maintained surroundings, especially the alpine gardens, are delightful. And the staff throughout the house are always friendly, reserved, helpful, and contribute to a relaxed atmosphere. The cost is not cheap, but what you get at Schatzalp is worth more than the francs you pay. Everything was very good.
