“Not at all value for money, lovely staff but do not recommend.”
The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful with local tips, and the beds were fairly comfortable; the room was clean except for a bathroom bin that hadn’t been emptied. Walking up the road to Ikenotaria ski field was a breeze. However, the transportation costs were the biggest downside: a minimum of 1500 yen to get anywhere, topping out at 5000 yen, and all paid in cash at the end of the stay. When we asked for a lift to the train station, the driver charged 10000 yen even though he’d said the maximum was 5000 per trip; he offered us 2000 yen back, which we declined. No slippers were provided, so we had to remove shoes. The room was so cold we wore our ski suits inside and slept with coats on the beds. Internet was spotty, constantly dropping. The place looked run‑down, with water marks on the carpet, peeling paint outside, and wallpaper peeling inside—typical of many Japanese buildings, but we paid a bit extra and expected better. Breakfast was decent but repetitive; coffee had to be bought from a machine, and if you don’t eat four‑legged animals, avoid the rice sprinkles and ask. Shops and restaurants were a bit of a hike, and there were no taxis or Ubers. Only one onsen worked at a time, and both times it was full of black floaties that felt like rubber tyres—maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be? The staff were lovely, but we won’t return. It might suit a group of lads.
