“建物は素敵なのに、もったいない”

I chose this place because I love historic buildings, and the charm outweighed the inconveniences, giving me a very good experience. Every corner, from the keys that spin to the stairs, is exciting, and it seems to appeal even to foreign guests. I stayed knowing the building’s shortcomings—no refrigerators or toilets in each room, and the noise from neighboring rooms—so that was acceptable, but the staff, especially the proprietress, were not very good. The website said the bath closed at 23:00, yet when I tried to use it after 22:00 I was told “it’s only until 22:00?” If the time changes, there should be an explanation or notice, otherwise guests won’t know. I don’t think the other positive reviewers are describing the same person; the elderly couple seemed to have a slightly snide tone in their words, saying things they didn’t need to. The young woman who cleaned the room in the morning was very nice.

The hotel’s proximity to the tourist spot was a plus. However, it didn’t live up to the glowing reviews; the price for an empty room feels questionable. I didn’t order a meal, so when I brought a convenience store lunch, I realized I couldn’t take the trash back.

The facilities aren’t brand new, but the historic building is kept beautifully, with occasional renovations, letting me enjoy the old charm. Inside, it feels like a fictional ninja manor, so you might get lost, which is part of the fun. The hair dryer’s output is too weak, especially in winter, so a woman might hesitate to stay again.

The elderly Japanese couple running the ryokan were very warm. The rooms are very traditional, and the building itself is also very traditional with steep stairs. It’s about a 25‑minute walk from Nagano Station, and the bus goes straight to a stop in front of the ryokan. The traditional mattresses are mainly suitable for back‑sleepers; in a side position they’re very hard.
