The food was excellent, the staff very friendly and the onsen baths superb. We will return! The pillows were a bit hard. You have to be aware that you sleep on a futon. Otherwise everything was superb.

Beautiful, very nice units. They were appointed nicely and well done, reflecting age and elegance. Indoor and outdoor private onsens. The bedroom is up steep stairs.

The detached house was spotless even though it’s old, and every amenity was arranged nicely. For the price, I would have liked the first drink with dinner to be included; instead it was an extra fee at checkout. We also wanted to have our kaiseki dinner and breakfast in the tatami room overlooking the river at least once, but that option was never offered. They might have assumed that because my surname isn’t Japanese we preferred Western seating, yet I had booked Japanese futon bedding on tatami, so that’s a mismatch. Finally, the hotel website and the in‑room binder suggested we visit the sister property Kotohira Onsen Yume Sansui, but when we asked, we were told it was closed during our stay.

Incredible traditional property. Beautiful well‑kept gardens. Onsens inside and outside were just wonderful. The room had everything you need: tea, coffee, iced water, toiletries. Lots of lovely little touches. Though the property is clearly very old, all modern amenities are provided. The food was outstanding at both breakfast and dinner. The staff are kind and very helpful. We didn’t have time for breakfast on the last day but they made us a wonderful bento to take with us. Nothing else.
