“A Curate's egg: good in parts”
The staff were exceptionally helpful, and shout‑outs to Evans, Ricardo, Pieter, Mercy, Mary Jane, and John; the second room we had was very acceptable, the grounds were beautiful as was the surrounding countryside; when the food was good it was good and plentiful, so we never left hungry. In the second room the toiletries and towels were acceptable, and the TV was watchable. Strangely, a double room had only one comfy armchair, and you had to be in the 5* section to get a gown and slippers; a safe was provided, but that is standard now. The room we booked did not actually exist; it was a figment of the IT department’s imagination. The photos were of the family room, with the bunk beds, airbrushed out. The first room we actually got was poky and claustrophobic, the TV too small for the distance from the watching position, and the toiletries notably absent. Towels were small and thin, the air‑con was noisy as was the bathroom vent. After 24 hours we were moved to a much better room. The first breakfast was not good; service ended at 1000, we arrived about 0920. The Grill Room was deserted, no crockery/cutlery/serviettes on the tables, no glasses for juice, no butter, no brown bread left, no staff, waiting or cooking. Boiled eggs were hard, hot trays cold and empty. We were tired and so decided to not travel about and used our break to chill. The first luncheon was a burger; we were the only guests. It took over 45 minutes to come out, and when it did the bun was untoasted, the onion rings cold, mushy and soft, the patty cold. I ate it because I didn’t want to wait another 45 minutes to get fed, but I let them know I was not happy. I ordered a cocktail, which was a goblet full of orange‑coloured ice water; not sure if there was any alcohol in it. After my complaint, other people’s drinks appeared less dilute. My venison steak was without the red wine sauce, and our Caesar salads were lacking parmesan shavings. The apologies were there, but replacements or taking off the bill? Naaa!! The pool had a collection of dirt on the bottom and the roses were smothered in aphids. It was not all bad, but when you are very tired and had a lot of stress, small things that should not have occurred seemed bigger than they are. That said everything I have mentioned did occur and was not what you expect of 4 & 5* service.
