The meals were tasty, but the room had a strong mildew smell that came from the nightclothes, towel, and futon.

The foreign staff were eager, always smiling and quite cute, but the proprietress never seemed to smile; the room wasn’t very clean, with damp spots on the tatami that felt unpleasant, and a noisy door or something next door kept me up late at night.

I left this trip feeling satisfied; I love traditional inns from all over the world, Japan included, and this place sits surrounded by mountains and forest, close to Nikko Toshogu and the tiny, charming town of Higashi Nikko. The on‑site and outdoor hot springs were pleasant, the futon was comfy for sleeping, and the staff helped with my luggage and were quick to assist with any issue. The only drawback was that it sits a little far from “Edo Wonderland,” otherwise I had no complaints.

The dinner was great, the shop was nice, the outdoor onsen worked, the staff were friendly, the smoking area was fine, and the room was good.
