The location was excellent—right in the middle of Haarlem and only a one‑minute walk from St Bavo. The price was reasonable in principle, but there were several problems. First, the toilet and shower were in the basement, reached by a spiral staircase with no handrail, which is illegal in the UK and potentially dangerous for an 84‑year‑old who had to hold onto the back of the treads. A handrail is urgently needed. Second, an adjacent property is on the other side of a door at the top of the staircase; there is no soundproofing, and the door bangs loudly with people going up the stairs. Third, the television had no antenna and didn’t work. Fourth, the cellar area where the toilet and shower are located had a double bed that was unmade, and towels and bed linen were scattered on the floor with no attempt to clean. Fifth, the heating was off, so the room got quite cold.

The spot is really spot-on, right in the middle of the city, but the ventilation was a bit annoying.
