The spot was right in the middle of town, which was handy. When we got there, the parking lot was nearly full, hard to find a spot, and the signs were unclear about where we could legally park. We walked in and the receptionist asked for my name, which I gave. She then looked at me oddly and asked if I had booked a different hotel because she couldn’t locate my reservation—because I’d accidentally used my maiden name, a mistake entirely on my end, but her reaction made my husband and me feel foolish. She pointed toward the hallway and said our room was in that direction, but we should have actually been escorted because there were turns, lobbies, and random doors that made it extremely confusing. The walk was long, and we noticed the hotel smelled like mold. In room 107, which was up some stairs, the window was only as high as our hips, so we couldn’t see out; the window handles were covered in mold, the curtains didn’t close fully and left a 6‑inch gap that people could clearly see into, one of the bed drawers was broken on one side and the other drawer had a pubic hair in it, we had no milk for a hot drink, the door jambs were clogged with dust bunnies, the lights were a mission to turn on, the spa bath jets were dirty, and we only had half a roll of toilet paper. We decided to bring our bags in anyway because driving home would take 4 hours. When we went to the elevator, it sounded like it wasn’t in good condition, so we avoided it. We slept, took a quick shower, went to get food, and when we left, our parking spot was taken; the only customer‑marked spots were in the dodgy parking garage at the back with no lights, and we didn’t feel safe for ourselves or our vehicle. For us, this was the last straw. We packed up around 7 pm and checked out.
