A medieval maritime power turned compact university town.
introduction
Pisa is a compact university city bisected by the Arno River. Most day-trippers gather in the northwest corner at Piazza dei Miracoli and leave by dark. Crossing the river into the southern and eastern quarters reveals a working Tuscan town where students outnumber tourists. You can walk across the entire historical centre in twenty minutes.
Airport connection
Pisa Airport sits just 2 km from the centre. The automated PisaMover train links the terminal to Central Station in 5 minutes for €6.50.
UNESCO recognition
Piazza del Duomo became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. The site includes the Cathedral, Baptistery, Tower, and Cemetery.
Tower booking strategy
Tower tickets require a timed slot. Book at least a week ahead online in high season to avoid standing in line or getting turned away.

Pisan food relies on simple staples distinct from inland Florence. Local bakeries sell cecina, a thin, unleavened chickpea pancake baked crisp on top in large copper pans. Locals eat it hot inside salted flatbread, called focaccina con cecina. Pisan cuisine also features pappa al pomodoro, a thick soup made from stale unsalted Tuscan bread and tomatoes cooked in olive oil.

Traditional trattorias serve lunch from 12:30 to 14:30. Evening service starts after 19:30.
Pisa's nearby San Rossore park produces organic pine nuts (*pinoli*), used in regional pesto and pastries.
history
Pisa began as an Etruscan settlement before becoming a major Roman port. By the 11th century, the Republic of Pisa controlled western Mediterranean trade routes, generating wealth that funded the construction of Piazza dei Miracoli. Defeat by Genoa at the Battle of Meloria in 1284 ended Pisan sea dominance. Florence conquered Pisa in 1406, redirecting maritime trade while supporting the city's prestigious university.
Cathedral Construction Begins
Wealth gained from Mediterranean naval campaigns funds the construction of Pisa's new Romanesque cathedral.
Tower Construction Starts
Work begins on the bell tower, which starts sinking into soft subsoil before three floors are completed.
Battle of Meloria
The Republic of Genoa defeats the Pisan fleet near Livorno, marking the end of Pisa as a naval power.
University Founded
Pope Clement VI charter establishes the University of Pisa, where Galileo Galilei later studies and teaches.
Tower Stabilization Complete
Engineers remove soil from beneath the high side, reducing the lean by 44 centimetres and securing the structure.
where to stay
Choose your area based on transport needs versus quiet evening atmosphere. Staying north of the Arno in Santa Maria keeps you close to Piazza dei Miracoli, though streets quiet down early. Staying south of the river in San Martino or Sant'Antonio puts you within a short walk of Pisa Centrale station and late-night student bars.
Live rates, matched to the areas above.

transport
Pisa is small enough to explore on foot. Autolinee Toscane buses connect the main train station to outlying suburbs, but walking is faster within the medieval centre. Official taxis wait at the airport and Central Station ranks.
De Pisa International Airport (PSA)
PisaMover automated train runs every 5 to 10 minutes to Pisa Centrale station.
Fixed meter rates to central locations. Night surcharges apply after 22:00.
Regional trains to Florence Santa Maria Novella run every 15 to 20 minutes and take about an hour.
Ponte di Mezzo is the main pedestrian bridge connecting northern sights with southern shopping streets.
The historical centre is a restricted traffic zone. Automatic cameras fine unauthorized vehicles instantly.
cost
Pisa is generally cheaper than Florence or Venice due to its large student population. Prices for meals and coffee drop substantially once you walk two blocks away from Piazza dei Miracoli.
